Next-Generation Battery Cells and Packs for Heavy Duty Trucks

Kai Ludwig, PhD, Powertrain Engineering, High Voltage Battery, Daimler Truck AG

The electrification of commercial vehicle fleets accelerates. Key component with respect to functionality and total cost of ownership is the battery. The usage patterns of heavyvduty trucks demand for battery cell technologies that cope with a significantly higher lifetime performance compared to batteries currently used in passenger cars. Based on “truckified” cell technologies and combined with a global modular approach, we at Daimler Truck AG are on our way to electrify our complete vehicle portfolio.

From EV Evolution for Passenger Cars to EV Revolution for Heavy Duty Vehicles

Sigve Aasebo, Senior Advisor, Vehicle Type Approval, Norwegian Public Roads Administration

Norway had more than 63% of passenger cars being registered in 2021 were pure EVs and is on schedule to reach our 2025 target of 100% EVs. For heavy duty vehicles, there is a target of 50% in 2030. This presentation will argue for even greater speed to electrify heavy duty vehicles, from a resource and climate perspective. This is partly because the batteries installed in these vehicles will have greater potential to reduce CO2 emissions and resources used per kWh battery installed. The 35-year journey for passenger cars could take 10-years for heavy duty.

Ensuring a Sustainable Electrification Era

Pavel Calderon, CCO, Nortical

Welcome to a presentation showcasing how battery data enables a more sustainable electrification era. At Nortical, we have developed solutions for a future battery marketplace where second-life batteries can be traded, safely, certified, and efficient. This is done by the creation of a battery data platform where real-life usage data is combined and analysed to ensure optimal usage of the battery as well as a cost-efficient second life.

A Phenomenological Approach to SOH Prediction of Graphite/NMC Cells

Pierre Blanc, Chief Technology & Industrial Officer, Leclanche SA

The use of water-based binder electrode manufacturing brings significant benefits to manufacturing costs, both in terms of materials and energy, and shows a significant advantage over prior art technologies. The cathode materials, in particular metal oxides, are more critical for processing in an aqueous system. We review currently used NMC materials with a high Ni content (over 60%) and will discuss the results of graphite-based cells using high Ni-NMC cathodes materials depending on their SOH.

Progress of Toshiba SCiB for Heavy Duty Transportation Applications

Kazuyoshi Kasai, Manager, Toshiba Corporation

In order to realize a carbon-free society in transportation, electrified power trains that cover from light-duty applications to heavy-duty applications such as trucks, railways, and ships that can withstand tough usage environments are important. Toshiba SCiB with LTO anode has been providing effective solutions in rapid charging, long life, and high safety which are bottlenecks in current LIB technology. In this talk, new SCiB products will be introduced that have excelled in both energy and power, and demonstrate their usefulness in heavy-duty applications.

09:50

Safety and Performance of Hydrocarbon-Based Cooling Fluids

Daniel Bien, PhD, Global Fluid Technology Advisor, Performance Liquids Technology, ExxonMobil Petroleum & Chemical

This paper will present the latest safety and performance tests of hydrocarbon-based battery cooling fluids for immersion cooling using commercial battery systems and modeling. It will show differences in chemistry (isoparaffin and PAO (polyalphaolefin)) and physical properties (e.g. viscosity and flashpoint) and its impact on performance and safety. We also will share our personal views on the industry trends as we experience them.

Real-Life Performance of Heavy Duty Batteries: A Case Study

Kai-Philipp Kairies, CEO, ACCURE Battery Intelligence GmbH

Batteries for heavy duty applications usually have design lifetimes between 5 and 15 years. But even batteries produced on the same machine and on the same day show substantial differences in their aging behavior. Online diagnostics allow OEMs and operators to accurately track and predict battery performance, safety, and ageing. This presentation shows real-life results from heavy duty applications over years of operation.

Hsin-Da Huang, PhD, Senior Manager, Research & Development, HCM CO., LTD.

In this talk, I will present high energy density (>200 Wh/kg) and safety Li-ion batteries with the composite cathode of olivine-structured LMFP and NMC. The LMFP, which we synthesized, with an average working voltage of 3.9V, had a discharge capacity of 150 mAh/g as well as excellent rate capability and life >5000 cycles. We conclude that the technology of LMFP/NMC composite batteries can provide the EV industry with a total solution of high safety, capacity, and power as well as long cycle life and low cost.

Simon Buderath, Strategy & Technology Consulting, P3 USA

CO2 emission regulations on the major automotive markets in China, the U.S., and Europe and an improved total cost of ownership position are driving the change towards battery-electric and fuel cell-powered vehicles. The presentation will focus on the market outlook for heavy and medium duty commercial vehicles and provide an overview of which applications are preferred to implement BEV. In addition, the impact on charging solutions will be presented.

Techno-Economic Cell Selection for Battery-Electric Long-Haul Trucks

Jakob Schneider, PhD, Research Associate, Technical University, Munich

We developed a method, which supports battery designers with the cell selection during the early-design stage. It determines the price per kWh required to reach cost-parity to a diesel truck for a given cell and is applied to a cell database containing over 300 cells. Results show that the cycle life has the biggest impact on the cell price at which cost-parity is reached.

Storing 60 Wh/kg in 15 Seconds: Novel Ultracapacitor Technologies

Sebastian Pohlmann, PhD, Vice President, Automotive, Skeleton Technologies GmbH

Skeleton Technologies has developed a novel ultracapacitor technology that is able to fulfill 15 seconds in 15 minutes of charge and discharge events with high efficiency and energy density of 60 Wh/kg. While this technology does not have enough energy density to replace Lithium-ion technology for BEV traction batteries, it provides a first-in-kind solution for weight-, volume-, and cost-efficient energy storage for 15 seconds to 15-minute high power applications.
